It looks like the battles over speaking about the... battles over controlling... the battles of government... controlling us have touched down at the University of South Carolina! Yep, Gavin McInnes and Milo Yiannopoulous have a "Roast" of Kamala Harris scheduled at this wondrous well of tax-subsidized wokeism, thanks to a student group called Uncensored America, which promotes its agenda as being for free speech. Buuuuut, since everything down to the last atom on Earth has to be under the sway of govt, making the control over the polis that much more important, the NAACP and some OTHER students want the roast canceled! The public statements from the NAACP reveal their go-to lines about "racism" and "hate speech," the former being something that critics of McInnes and The Proud Boys have perpetuated without real evidence that I've seen, and despite the Proud Boys being composed of all kinds of guys, and the latter being a term that is amorphous, used to shut down political dissent, and is something that, sadly, even conservatives have begun to use. Even if a person expresses hatred of some group or some practice, or something that might bring that person a lot of umbrage in society, if it isn't a direct threat against another person or his property, the state/polis is not supposed to be involved. Of course, this is a state institution, so it operates within the Tragedy of the Commons, and, as such, will see some taxpayers grow angry when their views are in conflict with something the university allows on campus. Public places and freedom can't mix, because public means tax-funded, which means force, which means an apriori attack on rights. From there, everything degenerates as people argue over how the public place will function, whose rights will be allowed and whose will not, since the public place can't manage every varying design for what the system can allow. Here's the story!NAACP, Students to Univ. S.C.: Cancel Roast of Harris

The NAACP is joining a group of University of South Carolina students in calling for the school to cancel a planned "roast" of Kamala Harris, which is scheduled for Sept. 18th.

As a former Star Trek dude who hung out in the Writers' Room at "Voyager” as their “Writer’s Guild Fellow,” (it was a slot the Paramount people were nice enough to create for upstart writers to get a chance!) I thought it might be worthwhile to discuss the way politics separates people, and how people with good intentions can grab onto political positions, believing big canards or amplifying small matters in ways that bolster their stances. And, as noted above, since we know that the govt touches so many aspects of people's lives, people become profoundly polarized over who will control the state. In the entertainment world, we are free to buy or not buy products. Sometimes (especially as govt touches more of our world) people infuse their entertainment offerings with political messages. The engaging stories often get away with the mixture, and some even stand the "test of time" to become warnings about strains of political thought. But here, with this gathering, we see folks from "Voyager" and other sci-fi "franchises" who not only take Trump seriously when he says he'll act like a dictator, but who conveniently forget the anti-free-speech, anti-whistleblower actions of Obama-Biden and the anti-free-speech positions of Walz and Harris. Here is Robert Picardo's post about their big "Geeks for Harris" gathering for Kamala, a gathering that will feature Jeri Ryan, Tim Russ, and others with whom I mingled at Voyager. They're all nice people, but they promote politics without seeming to be informed on numerous issues. One need not support a candidate (I support no candidates) to report on their seeming blindness to Harris-Walz and their embrace of unsubstantiated beliefs re Trumpola. Curiously, because of free speech and the sort-of free market in entertainment, we can turn away from their offerings if we don't want to give them the money for their conventions or politically woke television/streaming shows. But, even as they worry about Trump being a "dictator", they seem to want to make the world a much more politically-directed one, which is the centralizing philosophy that could come back to bite them if people they don't like are in charge. Here is Robert's Tweet re the event. And here is Lynda Carter's, which links to the registration page. The responses to her post are filled with worthwhile comments, some sarcastic, some much more heartfelt. I wasn't close pals with the actors, because we mainly were in the writer's offices, but I got to be acquainted with the "Voyager" cast, and, again, most were very nice people. This event and the people behind it make me think about how much more peaceful the world could be if government weren't used to make other people do things. Sadly, many of these folks believe that it's okay to make other people "care" – they think it shows real care, when, in fact, it's compulsion backed by govt guns. Here's the event page.

Here's a great example of a leftist "news" group (Public News Service) promoting a nearly 100 year-old boondoggle that A. is immoral, and B. is unconstitutional, going back to FDR. This is something on which I recently got to write for MRCTV, discussing how FDR used the "rural electrification" program to unconstitutionally spread the tentacles of the federal government via electric lines, then perpetuated the handout to become a big subsidy system for farmers and to incorporate "high-speed internet" into the theme. This piece focuses on recipients of stolen goods, never mentions the lack of constitutional permission, and never mentions the immoral origin of the system and its handouts. Check it out!
Ohio reacts to Biden's investment targeting rural electrification
President Joe Biden has announced a landmark $7.3 billion investment, the largest since the FDR New Deal, aimed at electrifying rural America. Funded by his Inflation Reduction Act, the initiative will bring significant changes to energy infrastructure across the country, benefiting farmers, businesses and communities waiting for modern power solutions. Weston Lombard, a farmer from Athens County and a recipient of funding, the program is a...

Mayorkas claims that its TEXAS' immigration that have wrought havoc and disaster. Meanwhile, the US government has no independent constitutional power to produce "immigration" law or have Mayorkas execute that "law". He also has not properly responded to Jim Jordan and others to differentiate between migrants who are counted as "encounters" or "apprehensions" and those who are returned to their nations of origin. The US has no place to do that, under its Constitution, anyway, unless a state government requests such help, and Abbott HAS requested that aid. It's not up to Mayorkas to tell Abbott he's not handling immigration correctly. According to the Constitution, it's up to each state, and if they request federal help, they can tell the feds that the feds are the ones who are screwing up. In fact, it's Biden's Administration that has helped over 300K migrants enter the US under their "parole" program, which hands them a phone app to get plane rides to virtually anywhere in the US and then... Disappear. Philosophically, no government agent has a "right" to tell any American that he can or cannot associate with other people, regardless of their nation of origin. No agent of the government has a right to make someone pay for a wall, or police, or Mayorkas, or anyone to "handle" foreign visitors. The only way people can show their openness to migrants is by voluntary action, under private property paradigms. The entrance of the political force, even on the state level (as the Constitution establishes), means that some people will be forced to pay for what others want to do with a "border", even to creating it, putting up a wall, arresting, etc. That's not ethical. Here's the story of Alejandro being unhappy with Texas! OH, NO!

One might think that she changed her mind because "banning" plastic straws is an immoral and unconstitutional act. One might think that she changed her mind because she realized that the consequences of banning plastic straws (which became widely used because they work and can be make at low cost) are economically disastrous and harmful to people. Instead, she has not necessarily changed her mind. She changed her position because, it seems, of the fact that it's politically unwelcomed by a lot of folks. Here's the link!

Even in a statist system, I can't fathom how the Georgia prosecutors can level charges of Second-degree Murder against this father of the alleged shooter. Pardon me for thinking they are doing so because a firearm was the murder weapon... Back to the immigration issue. NYC Mayor Adams often has said that the city cannot afford more migrants, and he has requested more and more federally shifted taxpayer cash to "handle" the migrants coming to NYC – a "sanctuary city" – something he formerly proclaimed with toxic pride. Yet, FoxNewsDigital reveals that, in addition to all the other subsidies and benefits (like cash debit cards) the city govt has handed out, for over six months, the city has been running a subsidy system to pay migrants $4,000 to find living spaces in NY (not necessarily in the city). That's over $600,000. As I've often said, I have no problem with people moving and with free association. This is the opposite. Government is taking people's money and preventing them from making choices with it, in order to hand it to others who want to relocate. Regardless of the matter of "immigration" this is immoral.

Here's the piece I got to do re the Mayor's endless complaints about not having cash, and his NYC debit card program.
After Complaining About Cost of Migrants, NYC Mayor Adams EXPANDS Welfare Debit Card System For Them
This toxic idea was bad enough when introduced. Now, Adams wants to expand it -- on your dime. It's an idea that combines the immorality of wealth redistribution with the plans of people who want government to supply a "guaranteed basic income" and who want government to create a "central bank digital currency." It's a dark agenda, and demands attention.

Although the SCOTUS majority claimed that the plaintiffs in "Murthy v Missouri" did not "have standing" to sue the federal government for its clear attempts to stifle speech on Facebook, Twitter, and via other sources (likely NewsGuard), because, as the majority said, the plaintiffs could not show that the feds (under Trump and Biden) directly caused financial hardship to any of the plaintiffs (in his dissent, Clarence Thomas cited an example of just this, despite what the majority claimed) the case is not done. It was remanded to a lower court, and now, more people are joining in the suit. Former NYT science writer Alex Berenson is one of them, and he and his lawyers are noting direct Biden Administration sources of the push for censorship that effected his career. One might also note that a "financial" harm/injury need not be the standard by which the SCOTUS decides if Americans have standing to sue over the wrong of the feds infringing on their right to free speech. The feds pressured the social media sites to do this. The feds have Section 230, FCC, and antitrust weapons to use against the social media sites. The feds were way out of line to engage in any of this, and the existence of the FCC and antitrust (and portions of Section 230 of the 1996 Telecom Act) are patently unconstitutional. Here's the Berenson revelation. The way they use "coerced" in the piece is curious...
