This is a good start to explore many of the contemporary canards surrounding the "debate" (ironic, that term) about free speech. Going back to the "can't shout fire in a crowded theatre" theatrics (pun intended) from the SCOTUS a century ago, this Reason piece digs into how Tim Walz exposed his foolish adherence to and amplification of the idea that the state can place "guardrails" on speech. The original statement stems from a case that attacked freedom of speech, did not differentiate between the US Constitution's First Amendment (which only applies to Congress) and the need to look at state constitutions for their "rules" on the disputes when it comes to state or local government stifling speech. From an anarchist standpoint, the baseline reality is that no gang of people can even assume the power to create "rules" and force them on unwilling, peaceful targets for those "rules," but there is more to consider when one thinks about the "fire in a crowded theatre" issue. That's the fact that anyone who owns private property can "regulate" what can be said, and regulate it to his or her heart's content. To abridge this is to use government to invade the natural right to property ownership. Here's the dig on Walz that allows people to start considering the more fundamental issues. LINK!
Yes, Tim Walz, you can shout 'fire' in a crowded theatre
It would be nice if everyone on a presidential ticket understood how the First Amendment works, but unfortunately, that seems to be too much to ask of

The ILA still is in the news, uttering more foolish and flippant nonsense. Not only do they not want to discuss the fact that many of the states where they claim control over the ports are NOT "right-to-work" states (thus making the union the recipient of government favoritism beyond even the govt-port-authority-special-interest cronyism so often seen at docks), the "longshoremen" don't want tech improvements. They're totally opposed to "automation." And, of course, in being opposed to the machinery that could do a job for less overall human effort and free up labor to do something else, they don't even look at the tech that THEY use which has come along as breakthroughs to make labor easier and allow people to be more productive. As I mentioned on my streaming show Friday night, would these union blowhards like to go back and ban the crane? The internal combustion engine? The cargo shipping container? Are there other tech developments — developments that, because they were able to reduce the number of people who had to work at a task, freed up labor, i.e. "reduced needed jobs" for that task — that they would be willing to discard? We certainly could employ more "longshoremen" if we banned cranes. We could even employ more dock workers if we blindfolded half of them, or made them hop around on one foot all day. The economic reality is that people develop and keep tech if it helps them, and the dock guys' focus on keeping things in stasis is counterproductive. Here is the piece on that aspect of their foolish "strike" and the ongoing claims they are making.
Dockworkers union asserts ‘absolute, airtight’ anti-automation stance
The dock workers union and maritime companies extended their previous contract through Jan. 15 to allow talks to continue on the remaining issues, especially automation.

And this is a good piece by Mises President Tom DiLorenzo, in which, near the end, he touches on this story and even offers a history of the origin of the term "Luddite"! LINK!
Is the Dockworkers Union a Corporate Tool? | Mises Institute
The dockworkers strike will increase prices while generally acting "in restraint of trade." This, we are told, is exactly what big corporations want.
mises.org
By the way, this automation issue not only stands contrary to logic and basic economic principles, the practical effect is harm to people who could get products for less and, during emergencies, really need items fast. Here's Eric Boehm on it, for Reason.
The dockworkers' strike is over, but America's ports will be some of the least efficient in the world whether they are open or closed.

ANNND, not only is Mr. Big of the ILA a blustery millionaire who portrays himself as a hardscrabble dude, the ILA is rife with corruption. LINK!

Across the sea, we see this, in New South Wales, where, SHOCK, people are discovering that there's not a sufficient market for "hydrogen" based energy over the cheaper, readily available OIL and GAS and COAL and SHALE. Why can't these stuffed shirts see that political pushes for the "alternatives" are not tied to the real interests of people in the market? LINK! If the Climate Cult would stop spouting their baseless claims, perhaps a few more people could see the energy market with greater clarity.

If the GOP establishment actually is interested in eliminating the malfeasance and inefficiency of FEMA, they have to look at the unconstitutional and immoral nature of FEMA and all government claims to "help" people by taking their money, paying bureaucrats, crowding-out private initiative, and perpetuating utter waste, when REAL people can help each other with greater efficiency and real care. Here's the latest on FEMA and the anger people are feeling over it. And, as I've been mentioning on the streaming show, the anger some folks feel about the US sending money and arms to other countries, sending soldiers to other nations, etc., while Mayorkas claims FEMA is out of cash for more storms — that's justified umbrage, but overlooks the fact that neither the foreign "aid" nor FEMA are either constitutional or ethical. It also destroys personal valuation regarding what is or is not "disastrous". When politicians define that, no one know if others actually agree. How hot is too hot? How much snow is so much it's a disaster? Only individuals can judge these things for themselves, and then express their positions through the market and voluntary charity.
The chairman of a House Homeland Security subcommittee is asking the Federal Emergency Management Agency to detail what it did to prepare for Hurricane Helene after it became clear there would be catastrophic flooding.

And, of course, we are seeing multiple reports of FEMA repeating what it did in the New Orleans area during Katrina, which is BLOCKING private initiatives. FEMA blocked UPS and WalMart from bringing in aid back in the Katrina disaster, and here is an example of more, today. LINK to the X post is in the Zerohedge piece.

EIGHT!
Here's another example of what collectivist "command-and-control" brings. So-called "conservatives" keep imagining that the US government is supposed to handle immigration, so they want the feds to do it "their way." That's not only an impossibility for expression (even the conservatives have varying views of how that should be done) and only can be shown by individuals on their own property, and it's not just a state matter according to the Constitution, it's seeing the current "central control" do precisely what the conservatives don't like. Funny, how collectivism also doesn't work for conservatives when they try to adhere to the idea of command-and-control. Link!

Here's another from Just The News, on Seattle adding to the already economically backwards mandates and restrictions. This time, the new political order of a $20.76 per hour minimum wage by 2025. Consumers will not buy certain items at prices pushed higher by politicians. That means employees won't be employed, new jobs won't be created, and people who DO pay the prices will have less left over to spend on other things. Totally backwards thinking.

Germany's Foreign Minister is expressing what appears to be the view of others in the German govt and something Hillary might adore. She wants algorithmic suppression of what she calls "misinformation." So... Even if one were to think that the government should mandate or subsidize an AI to vet posts put online by private parties, how can they determine what is correct and what is "misinformation" if they can't be sure what information is available when new issues arise? Curiously, the way to vet info is... To let individuals VET THE INFO. This kind of thing appears to be unending. They simply will not stop trying to manage and massage narratives, suppressing dissent, and shutting us down. How long ago did Zach Vorhies reveal the Google Blacklist, and yet, they STILL spout this dumb drivel...
